Sunderland Empire by julia (Member 10069624) on 13-Feb-2008
I am still trying to finds bits and pieces out about my family and I am wondering if anyone knows of a way I can find out about magicians that appeared at the empire around 1910 to 1920. My grandmother was apparently an assistant. Many Thanks.
  • Re: Sunderland Empire by allan (Member 10076681) on 28-Feb-2008
Where are you from Julia? I know of a person that used to work at the Empire and may have had access to the records, mind I can't promise anything. The Allen family' any ides what part of Sunderland they are from?. I do know a Ray Allen belonged Castletown, will be around the 63/64 mark.>>>

  • Re: Sunderland Empire by julia (Member 10069624) on 28-Feb-2008
Well I dont think my dad was in Sunderland then as I was born in Peckham and my mum and dad were married there is 1950. I think maybe Durham was one of the citys he was in as he sang in Durham Cathedral. This family tree thing is so hard. My dad had an unusual middle name of Chard, and his father was Walter Lennard and his father William Inkerman Allen. Hope you can help. Thanks.

  • Re: Sunderland Empire by allan (Member 10076681) on 28-Feb-2008
I will ask about the Empire Julia' but the rest could be a struggle, Durham is about 12 mile outside of Sunderland, but you never know.
Have you any idea what name your mam went under on the stage?>>>>

  • Re: Sunderland Empire by julia (Member 10069624) on 29-Feb-2008
No sorry I have not a clue, I only found out a few weeks ago for definate. Her name was Gladys Birkbeck and she was born in 1898 and married in 1920 so I guess it could have been a little after maybe 1915 I dont know what age they start work. Sorry I am a bit vague. Many Thanks.

  • Re: Sunderland Empire by allan (Member 10076681) on 3-Mar-2008
Hi Julia...... Been into the Empire website but it didn't tell me much, I spoke to my friend about the Empire and he tol me that the Archives are more or less impossible to obtain. I will still have a go at the Library next time I am in the town and see if anything comes up from there.
    Catch you later.......

I wonder if anyone could help me. My dad died just before Christmas and I would like to find out more about his family. His father was Walter Lennard Allen and Walter was in the army through the second world war in the Durham Light Infantry and served in Egypt and France as a Regimental Sergeant Major. • Re: Les Carter by The "wee" man (Member 10176442) on 13-Oct-2006
Yes Allan, he has a son to his first wife, who I believe still lives there. My daughter lives in his old flat, in the Exeter estate, and he has a small amount of cash that could be claimed. Better his family than anyone else. I have just clicked from the Corby board, your message, it baffled me.
